Two American past-times that destroy your marriage

American Past time #1. Counting other peoples money. 

Years ago Steph Curry was a breakout NBA star, however his contract was extremely low compared to other players that he was out performing. In an interview they asked Steph how he felt about it. He simply replied: “I don’t get caught up in counting other peoples money, I focus my time and energy on being a better basketball player each and every day.”

That mindset has served him well, as he has made over $470 million in salary and over a $1 BILLION when you include endorsements.  Not that I’m counting lol! Just finishing the story, but this proves my point. How much time and energy do we put into what other sports starts, musicians, actors and other celebrities are making. Let alone what your boss or your competitors are making. It’s way more than you think. 

We have all said at one point: “must be nice to have that kind of cash”, or “If had that kind of money I wouldn’t do the dumb stuff those people are doing, I’d be way more responsible and way more generous.” RIGHT! Sure you would. BREAKING NEWS, if you’re not being generous with what you have now, you will actually become more stingy and greedy the more money you acquire. It’s a very interesting paradox.

So how does all this apply to your marriage?

The more we count other people money, the more it destroys our marriage. Here are two ways:

#1. We don’t have unlimited bandwidth, every second we spend thinking about someone else’s money, we take away time and energy from improving our marriage, from being more connected to our mates and from enjoying a marriage of greatness.

#2. Comparison (Compare-a- “sin”) never serves us. Have you ever noticed that whenever you compare, you’re never equal. You ether justify why you’re better or whine and complain why don’t have what someone else has.  This is why it’s critical to adopt Steph Curry’s mindset.  It’s pointless to get caught up in counting other peoples money, it will never serve you. Instead focus on being a better Husband or Wife, focus on growing physically, emotionally and spiritually. That will always serve you.
