In the book of Joshua God commands the successor of Moses to mediate. Not only that, God promises great success and prosperity by doing so. Yet the Western church has mostly apposed the exploration of meditation. I believe it’s due to the fact that Eastern meditation is so prevalent. Is there a difference? YES!
Eastern meditation is the art of clearing your mind and not thinking, Godly meditation is all about focusing your thoughts on God and His teachings. The Hebrew word for meditate is (Hagah) which thanks to the richness of the language has many meanings. One of its main meanings is to describe the low controlled growl of a Lion when it’s sitting over its caught prey. Stay with me on this. In the book of Isaiah, God gives us great clarity about this. “When a lion, the great beast, growls over his prey, and when the shepherds band together against him, the lion is neither terrified by their shouts nor disturbed by all the noise they make.” (Isaiah 31:4 PTP).
When we are focused on God and His teachings with the same intensity a lion is focused on his prey, nothing can distract us, nothing can derail our faith or purpose, worry and doubt are banished, we are locked in on God’s truths. This is all done through meditation. “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8 NKJV)
